THE PLANT / THE STORY

What rose from the earth.

A leaf and a myth

Crush a mint leaf and its fragrance rises at once. In one Greek story, a plant’s arrival on earth begins with a disappearance below it.

Two tellings

The geographer Strabo tells of Minthe, loved by Hades and trampled by Kore, another name for Persephone. She becomes garden mint. His account attaches the story to a mountain near Pylus, giving the transformed plant a place as well as a name. The poet Oppian tells it differently: Demeter destroys the nymph, and mint springs from the ground. These are distinct literary versions, not one universal Greek belief.

A PRESENT-DAY INTERPRETATION

The modern blend.

Minthe Below takes that moment of transformation as its starting image. Spearmint leads this modern blend with a clear, sweet-green aroma. Lemon balm adds a citrus-like leaf note; chamomile rounds the finish. Those companions are our choices, not ingredients taken from an ancient recipe.

The planned growing source is Columbia City, with harvest and additional sourcing recorded by batch. A familiar garden leaf carries the story. Nothing in the cup asks anyone to believe the myth; its invitation is the fragrance of mint, newly noticed.

Story Notes & Sources for Minthe Below

Strabo’s Geography 8.3.14 and Oppian’s Halieutica III preserve different agents of the transformation. The myth is not botanical history or evidence of an effect. We propose spearmint (Mentha spicata), Melissa officinalis and Matricaria chamomilla; this is not a sacred, funerary or inherited Greek recipe.
